Time to sign up to new landlord licence
Landlords can benefit from an early bird discount if they apply for their property licence before 1 October.
Slough Borough Council is committed to ensuring all residents have access to safe and good quality housing. To deliver this commitment, two new property licensing schemes came into force from 1 July.
This means all Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) across Slough will require a licence and so will landlords of rental properties within the designated area covering parts of Chalvey and Central wards.
Landlords have to provide evidence their property is safe and has a valid gas safe certificate, as well as provide contact details so tenants can get problems fixed.
Licences last for five years. HMO licences, for a property of up to six rooms, will cost £450, with an additional charge of £30 per extra room. Licences for the selective scheme in Chalvey and Central wards will cost £200.
Cllr Mohammed Nazir, cabinet member for housing and community safety, said:
“This is not a money making scheme for the council. The fees are being ring fenced for the sole purpose of bringing up standards of properties in Slough. This is about making accommodation in Slough habitable for sometimes the most vulnerable members of society.”
If a landlord doesn’t have a licence, the tenant is within their rights to claim any rent they have paid from 1 July. Eviction notices are also invalid if produced by a landlord without a licence.
After 1 October landlords will be committing an offence and can be prosecuted, facing fines of up to £30,000.
