Five star food hygiene

Food hygiene stickerA busy few months of inspections has led to hundreds of premises being given a five star food hygiene rating.

In Slough there are approximately 1,000 premises subject to food hygiene inspections, including restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets, school canteens, staff canteens, nurseries, care providers, butchers, grocers, caterers, food businesses in private houses, mobile caterers, guest houses, cinemas and religious centres.

The ratings are a snapshot of the standards of food hygiene found at the time of inspection by the council’s food safety team. It is the responsibility of the business to comply with food hygiene law at all times.

This includes:

  • handling of food
  • how food is stored
  • how food is prepared
  • cleanliness of facilities
  • how food safety is managed.

Based on the risk of each premises, approximately 300 will be visited annually. Currently 84 per cent of food businesses are generally compliant and there are 341 premises across the borough with a rating of five.

Councillor Pavitar K Mann, cabinet member for planning and regulatory services, said: “Well done to all of our five star rated premises and those working to improve their score to be at least a three, which is generally satisfactory. Food hygiene standards are a really important way to show how hygienic and safe premises that serve food are.

“The stickers give the public confidence about the places they choose to buy and consume cooked food from, knowing they have been inspected and they are complying with food hygiene law.”

A zero rating is at the bottom of the scale, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.
