Smart motorway bridge closures
Work to deliver 32 miles of new smart motorway started a year ago and activity is now underway all along the route.
This includes preparatory work on structures and verges, installation of new technology and construction work on the carriageway.
Progress has been made on the western section between junctions 8/9 to 12 and work recently started on the eastern part of the scheme.
There are major milestones ahead this autumn with the start of main work to replace several bridges getting underway. There are several bridges in the Slough area and the first of these to be demolished will be recreation ground overbridge by Upton Court Park. This closed on 9 September and pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted to Datchet Road bridge until the work is complete in late summer 2020.
There will be closures of the M4 over the weekends of 27-30 September (Junctions 5 to 6), and 15-18 November and 29 November to 2 December (Junctions 6 to 8/9) to allow for the demolition and construction of bridges between junctions 8/9 and 5 with more to come in 2020 and 2021.
From spring 2022, the completed smart motorway will increase capacity, reduce congestion and deliver more reliable journeys.
