Making a splash
Families have been enjoying the new swimming and gym facilities at the newly opened leisure facility - The Centre.
The council’s flagship leisure centre was officially opened by Olympic silver medallist Colin Jackson on 13 April, with 2,000 people attending the launch.
A host of fun activities were arranged on the day, including sports sessions with Colin. He also helped present a prize to Parlaunt Park Primary Academy pupil, Siyona Bhandari, who had won the ‘design a swimming hat’ competition (pictured below with the winning design). The hat was being sold on the day, and some are still available, with the money raised going to Macmillan Cancer.
The Centre on Farnham Road features an eight lane 25m swimming pool, a teaching pool with moveable floor, 115 station gym, four court sports hall with specialist LED lit flooring, as well as three exercise studios, a sauna and steam room and café.
Everyone Active, the council’s leisure partner, runs The Centre day-to-day.
Sally Thomas-Ellis, regional contracts manager for Everyone Active, said: “We have had a great response since we opened our doors, with everybody impressed by the state-of-the-art facilities. There is so much to do and we’ve had more than 1,000 new fitness memberships taken out.
“We are teaching more than 1,150 people to swim every week, weekend bookings are very popular, particularly for badminton, and we have increased our school swimming from 16 schools to 22 since the move from Montem.”
Councillor Natasa Pantelic, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “The Centre is a fantastic new facility that’s helping to get more people more active, more often. Do come and see what’s available for you, your family and friends to help you look after your health and wellbeing in Slough.”
An exercise referral scheme is proving popular, a Disney themed swimming session is being introduced to engage new audiences and the pool is now opening two hours earlier on a Saturday to accommodate an extra swimming club session.
The Centre build was undertaken by Slough Urban Renewal (SUR), a partnership between the council and Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd.
