Welcome to our new Mayor Councillor Avtar Kaur Cheema.
Councillor Cheema was chosen to represent the council in this civic role, and her daughter Councillor Harpreet Kaur Cheema is her consort.
Councillor Preston Brooker is the deputy Mayor for this coming year, with his wife Shirley being deputy Mayoress.
Councillor Cheema said: “I am extremely proud and privileged to become our town’s Mayor. I love our town and want to use my year as Mayor to get involved in preserving and enhancing all that is good about Slough.
“I now look forward to a busy and exciting year ahead promoting our exceptional town and spending as much time as possible meeting local people, groups and charities and finding out more about everything that makes Slough such a special place to so many of us. If you need any more information, please feel free to contact me.”
The Mayor’s charity this year is BASICS (British Association for Immediate Care) Thames Valley. Established in 1977, BASICS doctors are volunteer first responders and assist our ambulance service at the scene of road traffic accidents in Slough and the Thames Valley.
Councillor Cheema said: “Much of the work done by these clinicians has largely gone unnoticed as doctors respond in their own unmarked cars, merge well with clinical teams on the ground and do so in their own time leaving little room for publicity and fundraising.
“With increasing need for funding for equipment to provide care to critically ill people, it’s vital BASICS receives the support it deserves.”
